North Korea Fires Suspected Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile

South Korea, United States Condemn Launches as Provocation

North Korea has fired more than 200 artillery shells off its west coast towards the South

SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) - North Korea fired at least 23 missiles into the sea on Wednesday, including one that landed near South Korea, the South's military said. The launches came amid heightened tensions between the two Koreas and the United States.

The South Korean military said the suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) was fired from the North's Jagang Province and flew about 400 kilometers (250 miles) before landing in the sea outside South Korea's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The South Korean government strongly condemned the launches as a "clear violation" of UN Security Council resolutions and a "grave threat" to regional security. The United States also condemned the launches, saying they were a "clear violation of international law" and a "threat to the international community."

The launches come just days after North Korea fired a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that is capable of reaching the United States. The ICBM launch was widely condemned by the international community, and the United States and South Korea have vowed to strengthen their defenses in response.

Tensions between North Korea and the United States have been escalating for months, and the missile launches have raised concerns that the situation could spiral out of control. The United States has sent a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the region, and South Korea has deployed additional troops to its border with the North.
